Orphan Sunday

We are one month away from Orphan Sunday (November 10), a day recognized by churches and Christians all across the world. The purpose of Orphan Sunday is to awaken Christ’s followers to His mandate to care for the Father and/or Motherless both locally and globally. Whether you feel a call to local outreaches or foreign missions, whether you are just beginning your walk with Christ or have been a follower for many years, whether you are single or married, male or female, you have been called to orphan care in some capacity. God has a heart for the orphaned, sick, widowed, and marginalized in society, and He is inviting you to join Him in caring for these people.

This entire movement started because of the heart of a Zambian Pastor. Although he and his small church faced many challenges, they gave generously to the orphaned in their community because of their firm commitment to Jesus’ commission. Now, over 16 years later, Orphan Sunday is a global event helping thousands of children. The way Orphan Sunday began is a testimony in and of itself that we can make a difference.

Globally, there are 147 million children living without the love and protection of a family. Within Canada, there are 80,000 children in the care of Canadian child welfare agencies, and 30,000 children in Canada awaiting adoption.

The good news is, there are 30,000 churches in Canada, and together we can make a difference. With your help, more people can learn about this event. Here are 3 ways you can get involved today:

  1. Pray that God would be preparing the church and speaking to each follower’s heart about the need for more orphan advocates, prayer warriors, and families. Pray that God would show you the areas where you can become more involved. 

  2. Spread the word. Share information from the official orphan Sunday website, post photos and statuses, or tell your friends and family about it in your personal conversations.

  3. Attend an Orphan Sunday event near you, and become connected with other Christians who are passionate about orphan care. There is strength in numbers – let’s join forces to reach more people and help more children in need.
